Oven Calibration Rings

Oven Calibration Procedure

Items Needed for Oven Calibration:

  1. One new Vibrantz ring per oven to be calibrated.
  2. One sintering tray (without lid) and 1 layer of beads (preferably 2mm beads).
  3. Measuring calipers.
  4. The Temperature-Table for PTCR (Vibrantz table). CRITICAL NOTE: The batch number on the Vibrantz ring being measured MUST match the Powder Batch # on the Vibrantz table. Contact B&D Dental to obtain the correct Vibrantz table if necessary.

Step 1: Set up the following cycle in your oven and label it “Oven Calibration”for future use:

It is important to follow the cycle exactly as indicated in the program above (Ramp rate 4°C /min up to 1450°C and then a 1-hour hold) so that the reading on the Process Temperature Control Ring (PTCR or Vibrantz ring) is accurate.

Step 2: Place 1 Vibrantz ring on the beads inside the sintering tray, place tray in oven then run the “Oven Calibration” program.

Step 3: After the “Oven Calibration” Program has ended, remove tray from oven and allow the Vibrantz ring to cool to room temperature. Measure the Vibrantz ring diameter as shown in the examples below.

Step 4: Using the sintered Vibrantz ring diameter, reference the Vibrantz table on the back of this in-struction page (Verify that the batch number on the Vibrantz ring and Vibrantz table match) to find the ring diameter and the associated temperature. Compare the temperature indicated on the Vibrantz table with the target temperature displayed on the oven. If necessary, adjust the oven to compensate for the difference in the oven’s indicated temperature readout and the actual oven temperature as indicated on the Vibrantz table. There are generally two methods to accomplish this:

  1. Newer model ovens may have a process to directly enter the temperature indicated by the Vibrantz Table to calibrate the oven. If this is the case, use the oven manufacturers instruction to complete this process.
  2. Some older ovens have no method to adjust the oven temperature readings. In this case, you will need to “trick” the oven by accessing the firing cycles and manually adjusting (raising or lowering) the program temperature to achieve the correct temperature inside the muffle.
